Kataang Days: So Glad

He stood there, breath heavy and body aching. His eyes were transfixed on the battlefield, the scarred earth still smoking in areas; and he muttered something to himself.

It was over.

A weight settled on his shoulder, and he straightened slightly. “I can’t believe it,” Aang whispered in response to Momo’s questioning chatter. “It’s finally over….” The lemur let out a cry, nuzzling the boy’s face before flying off. Something shuffled behind him.

“A-Aang?”

Turning, his view was filled with a sight that nearly made him fall over: “Katara…!” She took a step forward, wringing her hands (a habit of hers when worried) and biting her bottom lip. He smiled. “Hey there.”

“Are you…?” The question died. Her gaze lowered to the ground as she calmed herself. Wide blue eyes slid back up to meet him (she was holding back, he noticed). “You were wonderful,” she managed to breathe.

The young Avatar felt his ears burn, but tried to ignore it. “Th-tha--”

“I’m just so glad… you’re okay.”

And she was running to him, arms reaching out, fingers grasping for his cheeks. With a smile, he pulled her to him, the feel of her nose brushing against his sending shivers down his spine. They stayed like that for a long time, the comfort settling between them, the bond neither could explain tugging at their hearts.

He was about to ask her where the others were… when her mouth brushed against his. A simple touch, fleeting, careful. His eyes caught hers, and he knew.

“I love you, Aang….”
